Leucovorin and Kids: What we know so far.
Leucovorin (folinic acid) is a form of folate that has been used safely for decades, primarily in cancer care and certain metabolic treatments. Recently, researchers have studied its role in pediatrics because a small percentage of children with low folate metabolism may benefit — especially those with folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAA) or specific neurologic and metabolic conditions.
Since this is a developing area of research, there are no official guidelines for routine leucovorin or FRAA testing. Routine bloodwork does not detect FRAA, and specialized testing may only be considered if there is a clinical indication.
The key takeaway: leucovorin can be helpful for some children, but it is not for everyone. Testing and treatment decisions should always be made with your pediatric provider.
